Muslim Duas: Dua, or supplication, is an essential aspect of Muslim worship. It is a means through which Muslims connect with their Creator and seek His blessings, guidance, and forgiveness. Dua can be made at any time and in any language, but it is recommended to use Arabic as it is the language of the Quran and the language of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Common Muslim Duas In English And Meaning For Each Dua

However, for those who do not speak Arabic, it can be challenging to learn and recite duas. Therefore, there are many duas available that Muslims can use to connect with Allah. In this article, we will explore some of the most common duas.

Dua Before Eating

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) demonstrated the practice of expressing gratitude to Allah (SWT) and acknowledging His blessings whenever he received food. Additionally, he taught Muslims to recite the Name of Allah (SWT) before engaging in any enjoyable task or action, including eating. Therefore, it is highly recommended that we recite the following dua before beginning our meal:

بِسْمِ اللهِ‎

In English:

Bismillah

Translation:

In the Name of Allah.

In case we forget to recite the Bismillah before commencing our meal and have already eaten a portion of it, we can recite the following dua:

بِسمِ اللهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَه‏ُ

In English:

Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu

Translation:

In the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end.

This is based on the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW:

” When any of you wants to eat, he should mention the Name of Allah (Bismillah) in the beginning. If he forgets to do it in the beginning, he should say (I begin with the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end).”

A significant number of Muslims also recite an invocation that was narrated by Imam Malik and can be traced back to the Tabi’in (those who met the companions of the Prophet Muhammad SAW), Urwah Ibn Az-Zubayr:

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

In English:

Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waqina azaban-nar

Translation:

“O Allah! Bless us in what You have provided us with and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”

Imam At-Tirmidhi narrated a hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad SAW Taught Ibn Abbas and Khalid Al-Walid a prayer to recite when eating:

 اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأَطْعِمْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ

Translation:

“O Allah! Bless it for us and provide us with that which is even better”

Dua After Eating

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) regularly demonstrated the practice of expressing gratitude to Allah (SWT) for the food he had consumed and advised his followers to do the same. In one of his sayings, he mentioned that if a person consumes food and concludes by saying, “All praise is due to Allah Who has given me food to eat and provided it without any endeavor on my part or any power,” all of their previous sins will be forgiven.

In English:

Translation:

“All praise is due to Allah Who has given me food to eat and provided it without any endeavor on my part or any power.”

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) also provided guidance on another supplication that we can recite. In this narration, he taught Muslims the following Dua:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

In English:

Alhamdu-lillahil-lazi at’amana wa saqana wa ja’alana muslimin

Translation:

“All praise is due to Allah Who has given us food and drinks and ordained us as Muslims”

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

It is also mentioned in a narration that the Prophet Muhammad SAW used to recite the following supplication after eating a meal:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ غَيْرَ مُوَدَّعٍ وَلاَ مُسْتَغْنًى عَنْهُ رَبُّنَا

In English:

ِAlhamdulillahi hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fihi, ghaira muwadda’in wa-la mustaghnan ‘anhu Rabbuna

Translation:

“All praise is due to Allah – an abundant, pure and blessed praise; a praise that can neither be forsaken nor dispensed with, our Lord”

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)
