What is Ijazah?

The linguistic meaning of Ijazah ( الإِجازَة ‎) is “permission”, “authorization”, or “license”. In all goals and purposes, it refers to “authority to narrate.” In other terms, “Ijazah” is a certification that grants the owner permission to teach and recite the Holy Quran with Tajweed.

This authorization is granted to the holder of the “Ijazah.”  Ijaza is performed for the goal of establishing the transmission of the Holy Quran through a line of approved transmitters that can be traced back to the prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Ijazah in Quran Recitation

Students will be expected to recite the entirety of the Quran in front of knowledgeable teachers. The learner is expected to have a strong command of both the tajweed norms and the recitation rules for the Quran.

In the last stage of the process, the student will be evaluated by qualified teachers who will determine whether or not the student is capable of earning the Ijazah certificate or whether or not the student needs more training to get the certificate.

After successfully completing the Ijazah, the student is awarded an official certificate that has been signed by both the teacher and the academy. The owner of this ijazah certificate would be eligible to submit an application to teach the Holy Quran in any Islamic center, an Islamic university, or a mosque located anywhere in the world.

Ijazah in Hifz

This kind of Ijazah is awarded to Quran students who have excellent memorization skills and are able to recite the whole Quran from memory without making any mistakes. In other words, the Ijazah for Quran Memorization is a certification that permits its owner to teach Quran Memorization (Hifz), and it can be issued by an Imam or scholar who already possesses this certification.
