The Prophet Muhammad SAW used to practice thanking Allah s.w.t. for the food he had eaten. He also advised others to do the same. In one of his sayings, the Messenger of Allah SAW Mentioned that:

Dua After Eating – All You Need To Know

“He who has taken food and says at the end: (All praise is due to Allah Who has given me food to eat and provided it without any endeavor on my part or any power), all his past sins will be forgiven.”

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا، وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

In English:

Al-hamdu lillahi-llazi at’amani haza, wa razaqaniihi min ghairi haulin minni wa la quwwah

Translation:

“All praise is due to Allah Who has given me food to eat and provided it without any endeavor on my part or any power.”

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

The Prophet Muhammad SAW also guided another supplication that we can make. In this narration, the Prophet Muhammad SAW taught us the following Dua:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

In English:

Alhamdu-lillahil-lazi at’amana wa saqana wa ja’alana muslimin

Translation:

“All praise is due to Allah Who has given us food and drinks and ordained us as Muslims”

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

It is also mentioned in a narration that the Prophet Muhammad SAW used to recite the following supplication after eating a meal:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ غَيْرَ مُوَدَّعٍ وَلاَ مُسْتَغْنًى عَنْهُ رَبُّنَا

In English:

ِAlhamdulillahi hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fihi, ghaira muwadda’in wa-la mustaghnan ‘anhu Rabbuna

Translation:

“All praise is due to Allah – an abundant, pure and blessed praise; a praise that can neither be forsaken nor dispensed with, our Lord”

(Sunan At-Tirmizi)

Importance of Dua After Eating:

Serving other first

According to Abu Qatadah, the Messenger of Allah (SAWS) said that the one who serves drinking water to others should be the last one to drink himself. This means that it is a noble and praiseworthy act to prioritize the needs of others before our own. This hadith is recorded in At-Tirmidhi.

On Food Criticism

An-book Nawawi’s Riyad as-Salihin reports that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had a simple and efficient approach towards his meals. He never criticized, complained, or expressed discontent with the food placed before him. As narrated by Abu Hurairah, the Messenger of Allah (SAWS) was easygoing regarding eating. He would consume the food if he desired it and abstain from it if he didn’t find it appealing.

[According to Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Always accept a meal invitation

In a saying reported by Abu Hurairah, the Messenger of Allah (SAWS) advised to accept an invitation to a meal if it is extended to us. If the invitee is observing a fast, they should pray for the host’s prosperity. But if they are not fasting, they should partake in the food served.
