The ablution, which is called “Wudu” in Arabic, is a ritual act of cleansing. This is generally done before the performance of prayer. 

Muslims are required to perform ablution before every prayer. Although there are different ways to perform ablution, there are some basic steps that are followed by most Muslims. 

These steps are as follows: 

1) Rinse the mouth and nose three times with water.

2) Wash the face three times from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear.

 3) Wash the arms up to and including the elbows three times, making sure to cover all surfaces.

“Allah sends His Salah (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet (Muhammad), and also His angels (ask Allah to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salah on (ask Allah to bless) him (Muhammad), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic way of greeting (salutation, i.e. As-Salamu ‘Alaykum)” [al-Ahzab 33:56]

  • The first step is to make the intention to perform Wudu.

  • Third, gargle and rinse your mouth three times. 
  • Fourth, sniff water into your nose and blow it out three times. 
  • Fifth, wash your face three times from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear. 
  • Sixth, wash your arms up to and including the elbows three times. 
  • Seventh, wipe your head from the hairline to the back of the neck once. 
  • Eighth, wash your feet up to and including the ankles three times. After completing all of these steps, you have now successfully completed Wudu!

In the Sahih hadith of Sunan Abu Dawud, it was reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“The prayer of a person who does not perform ablution is not valid” thus making it a necessary act before you begin your prayer.

Finally, they should say the Shahada, or declaration of faith.
