What is Tajweed?
Tajweed is an Arabic word that refers to the rules and regulations of the recitation of the Qur’an. It is derived from the word “jawwada,” which means “to make well, make better, improve or refine”. Tajweed, therefore, refers to the practice of reciting the Qur’an with careful attention to the words’ pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm.
This practice is essential for Muslims, who strive to imitate the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) recitation of the Qur’an, as it is believed that this was the way the Qur’an was revealed.
The rules of tajweed are based on understanding the science of the Arabic language and encompass a range of topics. These include the correct pronunciation of the letters, the intonation (or tajweed) of the words, where to pause, where to elongate, the manner of articulation (as in “haa,” “meem,” “laam,” etc.), the manner of recitation (as in reciting slowly and with a melodious voice) as well as the rules of stopping, starting and repeating.
In addition to the rules of tajweed, it is essential to remember that the recitation of the Qur’an should be done with reverence and humility to seek guidance, understanding, and closeness to God. This is why reciting the Qur’an slowly and with great attention to detail is essential.
